Intent
At John Harrison, our curriculum inspires every individual to become all that they can be.
Our aim at John Harrison CE Primary School is to encourage our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. In so doing, we help develop their sense of self-worth. We believe that it is important to teach them about society (including how it is organised and governed), rights and responsibilities and what it means to be a positive member of a diverse multicultural society.
All content in the PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) and relationships education curriculum will support the wider work of the school in helping to foster pupil wellbeing and to develop resilience and the values that we know are fundamental to pupils being happy, successful and productive members of society.
The vision and values (peace, compassion, respect, forgiveness, hope, friendship and perseverance) of our school encompass the framework which drives our curriculum. We strive to provide a safe and supportive learning environment where children and young people can develop the confidence to ask questions, challenge the information they are offered, draw on their own experiences, express their views and opinions and put what they have learned into practice in their own lives.
Implementation
At our school, PSHE is highly valued and delivered through high quality teaching and by sharing good practice. We liaise with local professional agencies to enable us to prioritise learning within our curriculum and to ensure it is relevant. All staff act as role models and have high expectations both within and beyond the classroom. PSHE is taught discretely and when linked to other curriculum areas, as well as whenever necessary to respond to ad-hoc situations. We celebrate and participate in many national events throughout the year, raising their profile within school and the community.
Our PSHE programme recognises that young people will bring prior knowledge and real-life experiences to their learning. It respects and builds on these, providing a programme that reflects both the universal and unique needs of our students. In our school, we provide the children with many first hand opportunities to experience and embed their understanding, such as experiencing the process of democracy through electing the school council.
Through group work, class discussion and self-reflection time, the children build upon their communication skills, learning the importance of sharing their ideas whilst also listening to the views of other people. We draw on the example of John Harrison to place high value on the skills which allow the pupils to become all that they can be, such as perseverance, problem solving and communication. We foster a respect for the uniqueness and diversity of each individual, including ourselves, and prioritise the teaching of health and wellbeing linked to P.E. and science. We ensure a good understanding of online safety, linked to our computing curriculum. In relationships education, we equip the children with the knowledge they need to help keep them safe and to develop healthy relationships.
Supporting the children’s development in other areas of their learning and throughout life is central to our curriculum.
