Our music curriculum provides breadth and balance, is relevant and engaging and it is differentiated to match the needs and abilities of all our children to ensure that they are able to excel. Within music, we provide multiple opportunities for children to explore and play instruments, to learn about and analyse music from different eras and cultures, as well as to improvise and compose their own pieces. Music is progressive in skills and knowledge. Through the planning and teaching of music, children are taught key vocabulary and skills which develop year on year as outlined in our progression documents. Charanga is used as a resource to support our teaching throughout the school. Additionally, some music topics are linked to other subjects and our enquiry based Big Question topics where appropriate. Enrichment opportunities are frequent and carefully placed throughout the year. These are open to all children and the school assists in making them available where necessary. Upper key stage two are encouraged to participate in the Young Voices performance every two years. We also strive to ensure that every child has the opportunity to participate in performances throughout the year for example, the key stage one nativity, lower key stage two concert and the end of school performance by year six.

Music is used as a teaching tool and linked to other curriculum areas, for example dance, computing and wellbeing. It is used to support the development of the whole child in becoming the best they can be. Music plays an important part of our collective worship and the children enjoy singing a variety of songs. Opportunities for parents and the wider community to watch and join in with music are also embedded into our provision.
