Intent
At John Harrison, our curriculum inspires every individual to become all that they can be.
At John Harrison CE Primary School, our vision is to give every individual the opportunity to develop the skills to become critical thinkers and lifelong learners who will continue to question and explore the world around them. Within our teaching, we will embed a respect for the world around us, for ourselves and for each other. Through our broad, varied and enriching curriculum, we aim to provide awe and wonder within our science lessons which will inspire and nurture the children to succeed and flourish together as one. We believe that it is important for the children to know what science is and the different disciplines that are involved. We strive to show them the range of opportunities within science and use a range of scientists to inspire their love of the subject.
Implementation
Our science teaching will include exciting, practical, hands-on experiences which will encourage curiosity and questioning and therefore provide children with the thirst for a deeper understanding of the world which they live in. The youngest children in our school will be given the opportunity to learn about the world around us in their play and continuous provision. Within other year groups, regular and distinctive science lessons are used, preparing the children for future learning and potential careers in science. We use visits and visitors to inspire children to have an inquisitive mind and to be enthusiastic about the opportunities in the future. These ensure systematic progression and coverage of the National Curriculum for science, whilst identifying links to other areas including technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
In addition to this, we will give children the opportunities to explore and investigate scientific phenomena in a range of contexts and situations to provide them with the life skills for an ever-changing world. We focus on the five key scientific enquiries of Comparative and Fair Testing, Identifying and Classifying, Observation Over Time, Pattern Seeking and Research, which are the heart of all we do. We develop their communication skills so that they can confidently explain their thinking about different concepts. Our science curriculum encourages our children to understand the importance of healthy living and the need for good nutrition.
All in all, we hope to give children the inspiration, perseverance, joy and success to become all they can be- just like our very own scientist, John Harrison and we will celebrate these successes together as one.
