Intent
At John Harrison, our curriculum inspires every individual to become all that they can be.
We believe that all children should learn how to take the responsibility to lead healthy and active lives. We include every individual in order to develop their confidence and a thirst for self-improvement. We aim to equip our children with communication and cooperation tools to make them effective team players and leaders. We will provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities, which we believe is essential in supporting their physical, emotional, spiritual, social and morale development.
We develop our children to become determined and resilient learners who seek to overcome challenges. We strive to support them in to becoming all that they can be and fulfilling their potential.
Implementation
Within our physical education curriculum, alongside PSHE and science, we teach children about the importance of healthy living and the need for good nutrition.
We use the Primary Steps to P.E. to support our planning and the delivery of the physical education curriculum, ensuring that the children have the opportunity to participate in the National Curriculum requirements. However, as a school we value the expertise of local coaches, who work alongside us to give our children and staff a wide range of experiences, opportunities and skills. We also value the life skill of swimming and water safety. For this reason, the children are given multiple opportunities during key stage two to meet the National Curriculum requirements.
Every child within our school will represent their class in sporting activity during their time with us. This builds skills, self-confidence and a passion for sport which we hope will stay with them as they become active and healthy members of the community. Children are taught the importance of fair play, good communication and respect and these values are embedded within our school. With this in mind, we feel that it is important for even our youngest children to experience the challenges and learn the skills that lie within outdoor and adventurous activities.
We also believe in the wellbeing of each child, giving importance to physical activity in other lessons and modelling how to show respect for themselves and others. This also gives time for self-reflection allowing the children to evaluate their own performance and make improvements to be the best that they can be.
