Intent

At John Harrison, our curriculum inspires every individual to become all that they can be.

At John Harrison CE Primary School, we believe that maths is an essential part of everyday life. We want the children to understand that they use mathematical skills on a daily basis and that the understanding of key mathematical concepts is critical throughout life. Maths forms a major part of our broad and balanced curriculum. We strive for our children to become inquisitive learners who enjoy maths and want to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills into all aspects of their learning and future endeavours. We believe that becoming fluent in mathematical knowledge and skills is vital in enabling the children to reason and solve problems in maths at school, as well as in the wider world. As a school, we recognise the importance of basic mathematical skills, including rapid recall of times table facts, as fundamental stepping stones in our maths journey.

Implementation

We understand the importance of the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach to mathematical development and use this to provide a curriculum to include all children, building on their starting point. This allows children to have a strong core understanding of mathematical concepts which ensures that they can move on to apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts. Every child in school accesses maths daily so that each child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. The youngest children are taught mathematical skills and then they apply this within the continuous provision, both inside and outdoors. Maths is developed through skilled questioning by practitioners and children are encouraged to problem solve independently. We then build upon this as they move through school, acquiring more skills and knowledge that is developed and embedded from the previous year groups. All children are given the opportunity to be the best that they can be through support and challenge. As maths is part of our broad and balanced curriculum, the children not only have the chance to embed their maths skills in other subjects but also through our Brain Builder home learning activities. Key vocabulary is highlighted to develop the children’s communication skills so that they confidently explain their understanding.

Inspired by John Harrison, we encourage the children to seek out challenges and persevere by giving them problem solving opportunities and time to reflect and improve on their learning. In doing so, our curriculum ensures that children are confident, determined and resilient mathematicians and are ready for the next set of challenges they will face.
