Intent
At John Harrison, our curriculum inspires every individual to become all that they can be.
At John Harrison, we would like our children to develop an appreciation of different cultures, communities and countries through an engaging and inspiring languages curriculum that fosters curiosity and expands horizons. We aim to promote intercultural understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. It is our intent that all pupils are able to understand and respond to spoken and written language, speak with increasing confidence and fluency and write sentences applying the grammatical structures that they have learnt. We strive to provide our children with the knowledge and skills required for future language studies.
Implementation
Our chosen modern foreign language is French. French is taught across key stage two. Our curriculum covers the core skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar and gives an insight into the culture of French-speaking countries and communities. We use the Rising Stars scheme of work (which includes video stories, songs, rhymes and games) as a starting point and this is supplemented with the teacher’s own ideas and experience. Three units of French are taught in each academic year. Our lessons are sequenced so that children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. The curriculum progresses from word level work through to producing more complex sentences, using a range of language in the present tense. French teaching is interactive, creative and appropriate to each pupil’s stage of development.
