Our history programme of study outlines the knowledge and skills taught in each key stage and is based on the broad framework of the National Curriculum. At John Harrison CE Primary School, we centre each history topic on a big question to provide instant engagement and allow the pupils to achieve a depth in their learning. At the beginning of each new history topic, the pupils refer to a timeline to support their understanding of chronology and to make links to previously taught topics. This allows new history learning to be put into the context of a bigger picture throughout school. To support the pupils’ understanding further, we have sequenced the key stage two British history topics in chronological order to allow them to build on their prior knowledge and understanding. By the end of year six, our curriculum gives the children a chronological understanding of British history from the Stone Age to the present day. They are given the opportunity to draw comparisons and make connections between different time periods and their own lives. Local topics and our links to John Harrison make history relevant. Interlinked with this are studies of world history, including ancient civilisations. The high quality learning that takes place is planned carefully so that it is suited to the age of the pupils and is inclusive to all. Class teachers ensure a wide variety of teaching approaches are implemented and that there is a good balance of whole class, group work and individual learning throughout each Big Question. Vocabulary is progressively taught across the school, assisting the children in their communication and development as aspiring historians.
