Intent
At John Harrison, our curriculum inspires every individual to become all that they can be.
Our aim at John Harrison CE Primary School is to inspire the pupils’ curiosity and interest in exploring the world that we live in and its people, igniting a love of learning. The geography curriculum at John Harrison enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We seek to encourage a fascination about the world and its people, which will remain with the children for the rest of their lives. We believe that it is important to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with developing a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We strive to give our learners strong geographical knowledge, good enquiry skills, the ability to use a range of maps, the skills to collect and analyse data and the ability to communicate information in a variety of ways. We are committed to providing the children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area to help them develop a real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special.
Implementation
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in geography, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. At John Harrison CE Primary School, we centre each geography topic on a big question to provide instant engagement and allow the pupils to achieve a depth in their learning. We take opportunities throughout the year to apply and develop knowledge and skills in different contexts. Our programme of study is based on the National Curriculum and is designed to create a real sense of curiosity for finding out about the world and the people who live there. The youngest children in our school are given the opportunity to explore the world around them, as well as learning about people in the world. Within the other year groups, we provide the children with a range of learning experiences both in the classroom and outdoors. They undertake fieldwork and use high quality resources and geographical equipment to create memorable learning opportunities to further develop their understanding. Vocabulary is taught progressively across the school and supports the children to have the ability to express well-balanced opinions which are rooted in good knowledge and understanding about current and contemporary issues in society and the environment. This prepares them for their next stage of learning and beyond as they become aspiring geographers.
