Intent

At John Harrison, our curriculum inspires every individual to become all that they can be.

Design and technology is an inspiring, engaging and practical subject. It encourages children to learn and think creatively in order to solve problems, both as individuals and as members of a team. At John Harrison CE Primary School, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. Inspired by the achievements of John Harrison, children will be encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers, who overcome challenges in order to become all that they can be.  We believe that it is important for children to consider their own and other’s needs, wants and values whilst designing for a purpose. We strive to give children opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness. We aim to, wherever possible, link design and technology projects to other subjects such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

Implementation

The teaching of design and technology across the school follows the National Curriculum and every year group plan for three design and technology areas to be taught throughout. Children design products with a purpose and an intended user in mind. Food technology is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of the importance of a varied and healthy diet, where food comes from, and how to prepare it.

Design and technology is an important part of school life and learning. It is for this reason that, as a school, we are dedicated to the teaching and delivery of a high quality design and technology curriculum. Through giving the children well planned and resourced projects and experiences, they will become the best that they can be.

Design and technology also embeds our school value of perseverance, as we encourage the children to never give up on their ideas. They are therefore given the opportunity to evaluate and improve their designs and products. It is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject, requiring creativity, resourcefulness, and imagination.
