Intent
At John Harrison, our curriculum inspires every individual to become all that they can be.
We believe that computing offers children the opportunity to develop ways of thinking and understanding that empowers them in an ever changing world. We know that offering children a broad and balanced curriculum, which incorporates engaging challenges, will inspire, encourage resilience and develop problem solving skills. We are committed to enabling all pupils, regardless of background or ability, to achieve their full potential and to be equipped with the skills needed to be successful in their education and beyond. This includes enhancing pupil’s use and understanding of computer-based technology, as well as using technology as a tool for learning and communicating. Our curriculum will recognise technology’s huge potential for developing collaboration, communication and computational thinking, whilst also teaching children to understand the risks and to know where to go for support. The wellbeing of our community is of high importance to us. Therefore, we aim to ensure that all users know how to stay safe when using digital devices and we put online safety at the heart of everything we do.
Implementation
We recognise that children will have different starting points and different home access to technology but we believe that this should not be a barrier to their success. Our curriculum sets out how we will teach the National Curriculum requirements of Computing, ensuring that there is progression throughout the school. Whilst it is recognised that some aspects of the Computing Curriculum will need to be taught discreetly, many will be linked to other subjects, therefore giving the curriculum a tangible context. Online safety is given a high priority and is taught at the start of each term, as a particular need arises, and wherever appropriate to the content of a lesson, including lessons in other subjects. We use the concepts of content, contact, conduct and commerce to explore a wide range of issues and to encourage our pupils to be respectful and responsible members of the community.
Within Computing, we offer the children opportunities beyond the curriculum, including visits, visitors and leadership development as Digital Leads.
We offer children a range of digital devices, areas of study and opportunities within the wider curriculum at John Harrison to apply their learning and to master their skills. We have designed our curriculum using a variety of resources to make it engaging and inspiring and to ensure that the children become all that they can be.
