Welcome to Reception
At John Harrison CE Primary School, education is about successful, life-long learners experiencing the joy of discovery, solving problems and being creative. Our school is about developing self-confidence whilst maturing socially and emotionally to become confident, self-motivated individuals who are responsible citizens. These are underpinned by our Christian values of: Compassion, Perseverance, Forgiveness, Friendship, Hope, Peace and Respect and our school vision: ‘Success Through Effort: Growing Together Through Knowledge and Faith’.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) applies to the learning and development of all children from birth to the end of the Reception Year.
Early childhood is the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives. It is not just a preparation for the next stage but is vitally important in itself.
Learning for children is a rewarding and enjoyable experience in which they explore, investigate, discover, create, practice, rehearse, repeat, revise and consolidate their developing knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes
In Reception:
We value and respect learning through play, combining a child-led approach through enhanced continuous provision, with direct, bespoke small group teaching and adult intervention at the point of learning. Curiosity is engendered through relationships, interests, surprise and the natural world. We learn inside and outdoors each day.
By using the 'Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework' and 'Development Matters' we ensure breadth of coverage and learning in line with developmental ages and stages of the children.
We develop our children’s cultural capital through a range of themes that spark interest, incorporating children’s passions and fascinations.
We create close partnerships with all our families to provide the foundations children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up and we do this in partnership with home.
We love reading! We read through the systematic synthetic phonics of Read Write Inc. Children embed their knowledge of phonemes and graphemes, segmenting and blending and then apply their knowledge to read phonetically decodable texts. These decodable texts are taken home every day as well as free choice books to share either from the classroom or our school library.
We write. Children are encouraged to write throughout each day using a variety of materials. We also use Drawing Club to spark children’s imagination and develop them as writers.
We master mathematics in Reception. Young children are naturally curious, noticing differences in quantity and the shape of objects, and use early mathematical concepts when they play. We know mathematical understanding helps children make sense of the world around them, interpret situations, and solve problems in everyday life, whether that’s understanding time, sharing amounts with their peers, or counting in play. We also use Big Maths to embed basic number facts

Chatter group
Chatter group is a time for parents and children to share a story and songs. They then get to spend time together, completing activities that are linked to the theme. It is a special time to help promote the love of reading.
