Village Community
We are very much a village school and we are therefore pleased to be involved with different aspects of the village community.
Poetry By Heart
We are priviledged to be able to welcome our own local poet, Trevor Millum, to work with our Year Six pupils on their performance poetry. The children can then choose to go forward to work towards entering a national poetry comepetition, 'Poetry by Heart.' It is a great experience for our children and, last year, we even had a finalist who won a trip to London to perform on the stage at The Globe Theatre.
Parish Council Links
Our school council welcomed Ann Boulton, who is clerk to Barrow Upon Humber Parish Council, to one of their meetings. The children learnt all about what the Parish Council does and realised that there were lots of similarities with their role in school, including the use of voting.
Litter Picking
The school council responded to a request from the parish council and joined a village litter picking initiative because they wanted Barrow ‘to look clean and tidy.' We have undertaken many more litter picks since and are proud to be making a difference to the local area.
Wheelbarrow Weekend
We particularly enjoy taking part in Better Barrow's Wheelbarrow Weekend every June. Different groups of children have produced wonderful wheelbarrows to display over the years. Many of our children show their own wheelbarrows at home and many more enjoy following the wheelbarrow trail during the weekend.
Lanterns of Kindness
The children of John Harrison Primary School wanted to spread light with kindness messages. These were written on lanterns and displayed on the fence outside school to share with the community. We hope the whole village enjoyed reading them.
Community At Christmas
Year One made Christmas cards to send to a local care home.
They were delighted to recieve cards and chocolates back! Thank you very much!
Other year groups also made cards to send out to members of the community who were nominated to us because they might be feeling isolated. All the children involved really enjoyed making the cards and hope that they put smiles on the recipients faces.
Christmas Community Chain
During COVID, we made a Christmas Community Chain as an activity to involve the whole school, even though we couldn't be together in person. Members of the wider community were invited to add their own loop to the chain. This was our way of coming together as a community, even though we couldn't be in the same place.
