Our Collective Worship Leaders
Our wonderful CWL ranging from Year 3-6 who do so much including:
- Meeting regularly at lunchtimes with Mrs Crosby
- Giving ideas to steer school CW services
- Feeding back and collating messages/ideas from classes and parental feedback
- Researching and delivering worships
- Leading prayer
- Saying 'The Peace' and lighting our worship candle.
The children have done such a sterling job of this over the years that in September 2019, we launch a new more methdical 'Worship Works' award to formalise, guide and reward all of their hardwork overseen by our very own Mrs Kipling (BV).
Walking the Walk and being Courageous - Summer term
This year we have committed to helping raise the profile of how to indeed live by the Christian values that we hold dear. This is reflected in the superb programme inspired by The Archbishop of York through his 'Be the change you want to see' award scheme.
Year 4 have been working on this over the Summer term, exploring the online resources rooted in 'Faith in Action' and exploring how they too, can live by the example of Christ.
On September 23rd 2019, the children led a presentation to parents about all of their hard work planting flowers around the cenotaph in the village (as suggested by the local parish council) and were rightly, proud of their achievments. Rozy Brian from the ABYYT came along to present their certicates. We can't wait until next year!
Onward Journey 2019...
As a lasting gift for the children of John Harrison that leave us this year, after serving as outstanding Collective Worship Leaders, a book and holding cross plus bookmark was presented.
Additionally, Year 6 were presented with a holding cross from the Holy Land and the Footprints poem to use during worships this year, and which they will take with them as part of our Christian distinctiveness when they move on from JHS.

Pentecost 'The Power of the Spirit' - May 2019
We are always keen to try something new to engage the children and further explore key and tricky parts of the church festival celebrations, and this time it was Pentecost. Central to our link to 'Holy Trinity' church and the understanding of this concept we wanted to do something really different.
Uniflated and inflated balloons, cake to celebrate a birthday and an everlasting candle...can you see where this going? A wonderful service led by our Bishop's Visitor Mrs Kipling as ever. Thank you!

Developing Our 'Courageous Advocacy' - January 2019
On Monday the 28th January 2019, we were pleased to welcome Matt Hammond as an EdUKAid representative to come and tell us all about the wonderful work that EdUKAid carries out. Based out of nearly cost-free unit in Salisbury linked to a supportive company, the charity has the visions that 'To learn is to live'. Children are supported to learn in clean schools with shelter from the sun and 'tippy taps' to wash. Small amounts can buy resources for a whole year such as chalk for as little as £20.
As part of our Christian values here at JHS, we want to give children the opportunity to live and explore these. Going forward, children have exchanged letters and are currently eagerly awaiting the response. We can't wait!
Christmas Service led by Year 4 - December 2018
As always the children led a super service to end the year. It combined a mix of storytelling of the Christmas narrative with actions, traditional songs, an excellent recorder section as well as a beautiful choir performance. Mrs Kipling joined us to deliver Bishop Christopher's Christmas message before Rev. Liz rounded it off with a blessing. It is no wonder that parents kindly said 'Fantastic service, well delivered. You can tell how much time children and staff have put into it."

Christingle led by the CWL - December 2018
Another year passes and yet again, Mrs Kipling and the Collective Worship Leaders delivered another beautiful service in school. The advent ring was lit followed by suitable readings from the Bible including Isaiah 9 and 40. Special mention was made as The Children’s Society (who provide our lovely candles for the Christingle) celebrate their 50th year in England. Did you know the first service took place in our very own Lincoln Cathedral in 1968?
CWL then stepped up to role play how the first Christingle idea came to Bishop John in Germany in 1748. As always, a joyous moment of peace and reflection overtook the school hall as candles were lit.

Remembrance Service: 100 Years by Year 6 - November 2018
On Friday 9th November, Year 6 led a poignant service to commemorate those who died in the conflict 100 years ago. They took time to tell the stories of the men of Barrow who so bravely gave their lives for our freedom, before reading beautifully written reflective poems. They followed this with a carefully selected Bible reading from Matthew 5. Another job superbly done Year 6.
Harvest by Year 5: Living Our Values - October 2018
The fruits of the harvest were once again generously gathered by the children of JHS all in aid of the Methodist Foodbank in Barton. Year 5 led a joyful worship reading from psalms in the Bible before singing traditional hymns such as ‘Lord Of the Harvest’. The choir sang two lively contemporary songs beautifully, as Mrs Siddell and Ms Brumpton then accepted the harvest gifts on behalf of the foodbank. Year 5 shared their classwork on what they had learnt about the reasons for and role of the local foodbank before ending with prayers.
Another bountiful harvest!
